Maintaining Artificial Turf During the Winter

Artificial turf is known for its resilience and low-maintenance – but there does come a time when turf maintenance may be required. The truth is, after years of wear and tear there may be some areas of turf that need a repair or two.

Artificial turf requires very little maintenance compared to real grass, but basic upkeep will ensure many years of lifespan. Artificial grass maintenance, particularly in winter, will prevent damages from occurring and the need for repair.

Winter always brings frost and snow, and for a good many months. For the most part, it’s okay to let the snow and ice sit on top of the artificial turf, and to let the surface melt away naturally. For homeowners who want to remove the surface snow, a snowblower is recommended and it won't harm the turf.

Another problem during winter is the windy, stormy weather. This causes all kinds of debris and dirt to collect on the artificial turf, and sometimes get stuck. Snow (even heavy snow) shouldn’t impact artificial turf. While “grass” fibres may get compressed, everything will typically bounce back when the snow melts. Importantly, salt or melting products should never be used on artificial turf. Basic regular maintenance will do most of the time, while professional maintenance would be a good idea from time to time.
